When participants enter a group learning situation they often express a ‘safe’ purpose or reason for being in the group that mirrors the original and advertised purpose of the program. However, there is often a secondary purpose that underlies this initial purpose. The secondary purpose includes the emotional unease a person experiences and actually motivates them to attend the group. If the person is to fully committed to learning in the group, this secondary purpose needs to be valued, recognised and addressed.
